Obituary for Elmer T. Stoffels

Elmer T. Stoffels, 95, of McAlisterville, passed away at 12:39 AM, Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at the Locust Grove Retirement Village in Mifflin.

Born on July 20, 1925 in Newton, NJ, he is a son of the late Tunis and Elsie (Leonhardt) Stoffels.

On February 15, 1947, he was married to his first wife, Helen May (Cowell) Stoffels with whom he was blessed to share over 51 years of marriage before her passing on April 20, 1998. On September 16, 2000, he married his surviving wife, Minnie Arlene (Varner) Stoffels with whom he was blessed to share almost 20 years of marriage.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his children, James A. Stoffels and his wife Kimberly of Port Royal, Ellen M. Dency of Henderson, NV, and Brenda L. Simmons and her husband John of Little Rock, AR; one daughter in law, Ellie Mae Stoffels of Alexandria, VA; one step son, Gary L. Sheaffer and his wife Joyce of McAlisterville; one step-daughter, Shenia J. Boyer and her husband John of Liverpool; fourteen grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by: one son, Edward T. Stoffels; one son in law, Michael Dency; one sister, Marion F. Tinsman; and one brother, Victor Stoffels, making him the last of his generation.

Mr. Stoffels was a 1942 graduate of Blairstown High School in Blairstown, NJ and a 1949 graduate of Churchmans Business School in Northampton County, PA.

Elmer honorably served our country in the United States Army Air Force during World War II.

He began his employment working for Wright Aeronautical Corporation in Paterson, NJ. Next, he worked for one year as an agent selling real estate. After which, he was employed for the American Stores Co. (Acme) and then switched to Ingersoll Rand Manufacturing. Finally, he went to work for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. in April of 1957 and retired after more than 30 years of service in August of 1987.

His memberships included the St. John’s United Methodist Church in McAlisterville where he previously served as lay leader and the Fayette Lions Den in McAlisterville.

Public Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 10, 2020 at the Locust Run Cemetery, Thompsontown, with Pastor Michael Boone officiating. Full Military Burial Honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veteran's Council.

There will be no public viewing or visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Stoffels’ memory can be made to the Juniata County Meals on Wheels, 287 Deerville Road, Mifflintown, PA 17059.
